Expert in advanced academic networks, during fifteen years Bill St. Arnaud was Official Head of Research at CANARIE, Canada’s National Research and Education Network. Regarded as one of the most prominent figures in ICT research and development in his home country, in CANARIE St. Arnaud was in charge of the coordination and implementation of the world’s first research and development optical network, CA*net3, was senior architect of the first customer optical network at a global level, CA*net4, and of the concept of “user controller lightpath”, where groups of users belonging to a community can acquire and share their own fibre networks in order to provide broadband services.

During his latest years in CANARIE, St. Arnaud was strongly involved in the green cyber-infrastructure project, which aimed at the development of computing networks whose carbon footprint was equal to zero, with the purpose of eliminating the impact of ICT in the environment of universities.

Today, Bill St. Arnaud is consultant in Green IT and works with various customers in a wide range of topics, such as next generation internet and practical solutions to reduce carbon emissions (free bandwidth and electrical motorways).
